Adobe contributes ActionScript VM source code to Mozilla

There’s lots of coverage of this, but Adobe announced today that we have contributed source code of the ActionScript Virtual Machine to the Mozilla Foundation. Mozilla will be putting the source code, called Tamarin, into SpiderMonkey, the JavaScript VM inside Firefox. This is Adobe’s most significant contribution to the open source community to date, as well as the largest code contribution to date to the open source Mozilla Foundation. The ActionScript VM is the scripting engine for ActionScript, which like JavaScript, is an implementation of the ECMAScript standard. Both Mozilla and Adobe will be managing the project, and Adobe has two engineers who will be working with the community on Tamarin going forward. There has been a huge amount of excitement about this internally – we’re looking forward to working with Mozilla and the community on this.
