Cool stuff at DEMO 07

I unfortunately have a very short stay at DEMO this year due to our wonderful government needing me on call for Jury Duty later in the week. I’m only able to see the morning demos and then I have to take off, but here’s the fun stuff so far (other than Apollo of course!).

Zink Imaging- zero ink photo printing technology. Looks very cool – sweet little no-ink printer. The magic is in the paper. Form factor is about the size of a Blackberry – really designed for printing pictures off of mobile phones. The photos are tough as well – water resistant, tear resistant. Adoption will no doubt be driven by the cost of the paper, which was not mentioned in the demo. Regardless, it looks like a great technology.

6th Sense Analytics – nice app, but I can’t imagine something that a software engineer would hate more. Something that tracks how much time is spent coding vs time on IM and email. It attaches “sensors” to various development tools to track usage. Great for management but wow, there’s nothing like having Big Brother living in your editor.

Eyejot – video messaging app. Probably the best of these that I’ve seen – it’s quick and looks very simple to use. Nice merge of video and IM, integration with MySpace, iTunes…and hence on the iPod. Can also listen to the message on the phone, it’s client free and cross platform (built in Flash/Flex).

Honeypitch – I don’t usually get excited about this kind of thing – it’s a proposal automation solution. But what was really sweet about this was the integration of video, PDF, etc… in a really nice looking application. The presenter, James Tucker, donned a wig to play one of his clients – definitely a DEMOgod contender for just having the guts to do that!

Symantec Norton Identity Client – seems to be a great, comprehensive app for protecting your online identity, helping to identify unsafe sites, spam sites and phishing scams. Also integrates features such as one-time use credit cards, site specific email addresses, etc… so that you can conduct a transaction without handing over your credentials. What was nice about this one is that it looked easy to use and well integrated with normal browsing transactions.

Jaman – brings the long tail of world cinema to the desktop and combines it with a social network, and the comments are inserted into the various relevant scenes. Integrated search engine, recommendation engine, works full-screen, cross-OS. This looks very cool for all those indie-film buffs.

Total Immersion – saw this last night as we were prepping. It’s a way to implement 3-D objects in real time – unfortunately it’s not working due to the wrong camera being used, but it was really very cool last night. Fortunately part of the demo worked, showing 3-D objects interacting on a small city model. The market is reality gaming, video games, couldn’t tell what else. It was definitely the most FUN demo of the morning.

That’s it – wish I could stay for more!
